What are your favourite books and films?

If you could be a character out of any book who would you be?

Do you have any hobbies you like beside drawing?

Do you have any pets? Do they ever make an appearance in your books?

What school(s) did you attend? Did you study illustration?

As a child I grew up and went to school in Aberdeenshire, Scotland where I had a very encouraging art teacher. He encouraged me to go to art school which lead me to attend Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art, part of The University of Dundee. I received a first class BA (Hons) in Illustration after four years of study. After this I went on to The University of Plymouth and undertook a Pg (Dip) in Publishing to gain more industry experience. This helped me gain work experience and my first illustration/publishing job.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

What are your favourite books and films?

I am a self confessed book nerd and I have quite a collection of fairytales, children's classics as well as an array of picture books that inspire me. My favourite books as a child were Enid Blyton's Magic Faraway Tree. In fact I pretty much always had my nose in an Enid Blyton book. I also love Maurice Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are.

As a grown up I didn't move far away from made up lands and faraway places as I still love to read fairytales, fantasy and I also like a little bit of horror. My ultimate favourite books are the Harry Potter series. Like so many others, I am completely obsessed and yes, I do think J K Rowling is a genius.

In the same vein I love fairytale, fantasy and classic horror films and of course I love The Harry Potter films. I am always first in line to see the latest Tim Burton film or fairytale inspired feature. I also loved Jim Henson films as a child such as Labyrinth and Dark Crystal.

If you could be a character out of any book who would you be?

I think you can probably guess what I am going to say- it would be Hermione Granger, who wouldn't want to go to Hogwarts and have wizarding adventures! If only I had received my Hogwarts acceptance letter (sigh!). I also always have my nose in a book and am a bit of a nerd so can relate to the Granger's of this world! However those that know me might also say I am more like Luna Lovegood and in my own little dream world!

I also wouldn't have minded being one of the characters from The Faraway Tree, who wouldn't want to visit all those exciting lands at the top of a mystical old tree with their friends.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

Do you have any hobbies you like besides drawing?

When I am not in my studio I like being outdoors however I confess I am also a bit fairweather and when it is cold outside I like nothing better than cosying up by the fire with my knitting or a good book. I enjoy going for walks with my dog at the beach or in the woods, near where I live. It is where I do my best thinking and inspires a lot of my stories. It is quite famous five around where I live on the Isle of Wight with its craggy coastline and old stories of smugglers.

A couple of things you may find surprising is I really like hula hooping and can even do a few tricks. As I love the sea I also enjoy paddleboarding and I do have a scuba qualification and have dived abroad a few times too.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

Do you have any pets? Do they ever make an appearance in your books?

I have a black Labrador called Wilson (and yes he is named after the basketball from Castaway so I can shout Wiiiilllllsssooonnnnnn loudly on the beach). He is naughty and wilful but very lovable.

I also have a cat called Mouse. She is a British Blue with beautiful big orange eyes and can charm anyone with one look! She is the naughty sidekick in my new book Chasing Butterflies so yes, she has now made an appearance in one of my books.
